A ride in the Black Volga through the Black Silesia

Upper Silesia... The land of myths, legends and harsh reality. The place where hellish atmosphere of underground mines and almost-tropical heat of steel mills blend with raw beauty of mine shafts, great furnaces and chimneys that dominate the horizon as if they were towering temples of some forgotten civilization.

Structures built during the two centuries long period of industralization - some of them no more in use, falling victim to corrosion and decay - form mysterious islands of bygone era right in the centres of incessantly developing modern towns. These ruins, rivets, brick walls and strangely ornamental steel shapes – all of them have been the silent witnesses to the lives of people who have walked among them for dozens of years.

How many stories do these structures remember? How many uprisings, worker strikes and mutinies have they seen? How many occurences – both fortunate and unfortunate ones – have taken place next to them? How many undiscovered secrets do they know?

We’d like to invite you on a tour through the region that is truly one of its kind. Upper Silesia is the only place in the world with that great number of remains from over two hundred years of industrialization. By taking this tour, you’ll be able to experience the history of Upper Silesian first-hand. When travelling with us, you will:

• descend hundreds of meters beneath the earth’s surface to see a 120 years old coal mine,
• climb at the very top of a mine shaft,
• touch the world’s tallest (110 meters!) wooden structure,
• take a ride along Europe’s oldest – and remaining in use to this day – narrow gauge railway,
• see some of the first apartment buildings that have been built in Poland during the Stalinist period,
• drink fresh beer in the brewery with a nearly 400 years long tradition.

And these are only a few of the attractions that Upper Silesia has to offer!

To each of the places that are part of our tour we’ll give you a comfortable ride in a car that is a true veteran of Polish roads: the renovated GAZ 24 Volga. A black one, just like the ones that in 1960s and 1970s were used by senior managers of Silesia’s state-owned companies.

To take part in the tour, you only need to make one telephone call. You can also make a booking right here, at our website.

We invite you wholeheartily to take a ride in the Black Volga through the Black Silesia!

Attention: We are not a tourist agency. We do not want to be. Our tours have character of a nostalgic and artistic performance. The driver of Black Volga is not a chauffeur. He is an artist and a storyteller. Each tour and each conversation is treated individually and strictly private
